For EIDE drives, be sure to set the jumper to the master position before hooking up.Occasionally, your computer may not recognize the drive connected to this device when connecting to your computer. Yet the drive is functional when I hooked it up to my computer's IDE port. Next, power up the drive again then waiting until the drive spins up fully and then connect the USB plug to your computer. It also works with SATA notebook hard drives and desktop optical drives whether it'll be EIDE or SATA connected to your USB 2 port. This has happened to me with the old 100 MB Zip drive.
You can hook up an old EIDE, SATA and as well as a EIDE 2 1/2" notebook hard drive. You can also use it to set up a spare hard drive as your external storage. Under that condition, the best option would be to unplug from the USB port and pulled the power plug. No matter how many times I tried, it still doesn't work. I found that this is a very useful piece of equipment to have on hand to transfer your files off of your old hard drives.
It's only ideal on USB 2,the original USB is much too slow for file copying or transfer. If after you repeat this several times and it still unable to recognize the drive, it is possible that the adapter and drive aren't compatible.

A must have for every IT person- it will save you a lot of time. I didn't even have to use the CD. This product works on Serial drives. I recovered data from an OS corrupt boot sector ATA-150 2.5 hard drive. Plugged in the drive- it showed up as a new local drive and I copied the data.
Don't know about the OTB (one touch backup) feature - haven't used that. (The 2.5" laptop drives get enough power from the USB port alone). I find these really useful in my computer shop. They do require an AC adapter with molex and sata power connectors for use with 3.5" hard drives. So make sure it comes with an AC adapter.
The best part about it is that it has the power cord so you can access an internal hard drive like it was an external one. You should buy it. This product works great. Good purchase.
